A disease of the brain or spinal cord caused by an infection with the gram-negative bacteria Treponema pallidum pallidum. This disease is characterized by four different forms: meningovascular, tabes dorsalis, general paresis, or may be asymptomatic. Clinical signs normally manifest approximately 4-25 years after initial infection. Transmission is commonly by sexual contact.
