DEFINITION

Proto-oncogene c-Fos (380 aa, ~41 kDa) is encoded by the human FOS gene. This protein is involved in transcriptional regulation, DNA binding and signal transduction.

DesignNote

FOS is involved in growth-related transcriptional control, is a key regulator of osteoclast-macrophage lineage determination, and is a major component of the heterodimeric DNA-binding AP-1 transcription factor complex, which includes JUN family members. Both proteins contain a bZIP region. AP-1 binds to TREs (TPA-responsive elements) in the promoters of target genes. (from OMIM 164810)
