DEFINITION |
L-selectin (372 aa, ~42 kDa) is encoded by the human SELL gene. This protein plays a role in leukocyte adhesion and rolling. |
DesignNote |
L-Selectin is a cell surface glycoprotein adhesion molecule that serves as a homing receptor for lymphocytes to lymph node high endothelial venules. The molecule is composed of multiple domains: one homologous to lectins, one to epidermal growth factor, and two to C3/C4 binding protein consensus repeat units. L-Selectin may also play a role in neutrophil adhesion to endothelium at sites of inflammation. A tissue-specific mucin-like endothelial glycoprotein appears to function as ligand for L-selectin, in the role of scaffold that presents carbohydrates to the L-selectin lectin domain. PLAUR is directly associated with the carbohydrate-binding domain of L-selectin in the membrane of neutrophils, an association analogous to that between PLAUR and beta-2 integrins. Cell adhesion molecule and CD antigen that serves as a homing receptor for lymphocytes to lymph node high endothelial venules. |
