DEFINITION

One of two types of loose tissue formed during early embryonic development: mesenchyme and mucoid. Mesenchyme connective tissue eventually forms the supporting tissues of the embryo; mucoid connective tissue is found in the umbilical cord (Wharton's jelly), pulp of developing teeth, and in the nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disks.
