DEFINITION

A family of sialoglycoproteins that are found in erythrocytes. Members of this family are transmembrane proteins and are able to interact with both oligosaccharides on the extracellular surface and the cytoplasmic contractile proteins spectrin and actin.

DesignNote

There are 4 human glycophorin genes; A, B, C and E. (Glycophorin D is produced by alternative splicing of the glycophorin C gene.) Glycophorins can play a role in pathogen binding and entry into erythrocytes and some also function as blood group antigens.
