| DEFINITION |
TATA-box-binding protein (339 aa, ~38 kDa) is encoded by the human TBP gene. This protein is involved in both DNA binding and gene transcription initiation. |
| DesignNote |
The poly-Gln region of TATA-box-binding protein (amino acids 55-95 in the cannonical protein sequence) is highly polymorphic. There are 25 to 42 repeats in normal individuals and 47-63 repeats in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia 17. The TATA Binding Protein (TBP) is a DNA-binding component of the TFIID basal transcription factor of the class II genes (transcribed by RNA polymerase II), the TFIIIB class III transcription factor, and the TIF-1B (SL1) class I factor. Its name is derived from the A-T rich DNA motif that it binds to in the class II genes, most commonly TATAAAA. |
