definition |
Process by which cells irreversibly stop dividing and enter a state of permanent growth arrest without undergoing CELL DEATH. Senescence can be induced by DNA DAMAGE or other cellular stresses, such as OXIDATIVE STRESS. Cellular senescence during AGING or due to extended passages of normal cells in culture and that is triggered by the DNA damage-response to TELOMERE SHORTENING or by repeated exposure to stress signals.
